New York Daily News - Home - Mortimer Zuckerman: How the Dems lost it: "Once champions of the little guy, now they're seen as out-of-touch elitists
Democrats are agonizing, as well they should, over how they could have lost the election so badly when they had so many issues going their way. After all, the vast bulk of middle- and working-class Americans are being financially squeezed between slowly rising wages and escalating costs for oil, health care and education, and the war on terrorism is seen through the prism of TV news on Iraq, which focuses on horrific pictures of terrorist violence.
Yet President Bush not only won reelection convincingly, he saw his party expand its majorities in the House and Senate. The Democratic Party should have been riding a wave of popular support. After all, it has always cast itself as the party of the little guy fighting against the GOP, the party of the wealthy. "
