SMYSP- Annette: "'In high school I was very into academics; I have always taken school very seriously,' she says. 'But I was not accepted by my peers. The African American students accused me of trying to 'be white' and of thinking that I was 'better' than them because I was into school and not really into hanging out. And even though I was into these very social school activities, I wasn't accepted by the white students either because they couldn't get past me being black. So the biggest obstacle I faced was to maintain focus and rise above all of the peer pressure to stay true to myself. I straddled two worlds and didn't really like either of them.' "
