SALON Departments: This Sporting Life: "As was the case in apartheid South Africa, whites consider anyone not completely white to be black. However, a black who is 'too white' is looked upon suspiciously by his black teammates. If he acts white, i.e. doesn't distinguish himself as being black by his dress, his music, his diction, or his associations, he is quietly accused of trying to be white. In other words, someone in the middle of the two races, a logical bridge between the chasm of misunderstanding, is scorned and often burned from both sides of the locker room. "
