One event that has happend recently has had me really fuming inside! A Black group booing a BLACK MAN simply because of his party affiliation and him mentioning something he thought his party did that was a positive for Black people! They booed him so long that a leader in their group had to calm them down and have them show some respect! Like a room full of children! And to think this happend at the National Baptist Convention! Where the "church folks" are supposed to reside!
I think this proves how deep the "party loyalty" is entrenched in the minds of some folks! This BLACK MAN did not say anything negative or offensive. But was treated pretty cold by his own!And the Black man was Alphonso Jackson the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He mentioned that more Blacks own homes now than ever before. You would have thought he cursed the room! I just think he should have been shown some level of respect to say his say.
I was not going to mention it here, but I'm impressed by Alphonso's spirit. To respond to the negativity instead of simply turning tail and crawling under a rock. (I thought he was gonna disappear.) Most who get this treatment simply roll over and don't speak openly about it. But Alphonso has put together a rather impressive response and been going out to say he's not going to roll over!
I'm not into the "go with my party" talk (from any side), but just the same I think he's got one valid point if nothing else. For a White man to get cheers while a Black man gets jeers for simply saying what he thinks is good is a pretty sad thing. (The occurances were with 2 different groups [CBC and National Baptists], but still he's on point!) I think the responses would have been the same even if Alphonso was talking to the CBC and Kerry to the NBC. Especially given their exchanges with Nader I have little doubt!
And for Alphonso to continue "reaching out" shows a good bit of guts.
