Time right for blacks to give GOP chance: "What have we got to lose? We have put all our eggs in the Democratic basket, and what have we to show for it? Under the two terms of Clinton, more African-American males went to prison than during President Reagan's two terms and Bush's one term combined. The number of African-American females heading single-parent households and the number of African-Americans denied mortgages continue to rise. And what about education in poor urban and rural communities - black or white? Here in Charleston, according to the figures published by the Charleston County School District during their campaign for the bond referendum, Burke High School loses 50 percent of its freshmen before they graduate. They are lost to jail or to the streets.
Critical situations demand action by any means necessary. Republicans have said they are willing to sit down and construct a meaningful agenda to address the joblessness, crisis in education and the dependent economy within our communities. We owe it to those within our communities trapped in conditions of poverty to work with them.
The African-American political agenda must find its way through both major parties if it is to advance. Alignment with only one party has retarded our growth and regulated our voice to a whisper. There are bad people in both parties with segregationist mentalities. Both parties have been guilty of ignoring our political agenda. So why vilify one party and exclude it as a means to advance our agenda? "
