The M.D. Durrington Perspective - Black Americans and Foreign Policy: "This nation has finally put its foreign policy and diplomatic trust in the hands of Blacks. Colin Powell as U.S. secretary of State and Dr. Condeleeza Rice as U.S. National Security Advisor are the literal faces of the United States around the world. Although Blacks have made it to the middle of the inner circle, foreign policy is still foreign to most Blacks in America. For example, find the man wearing the dashiki or a woman in a kente cloth skirt to name 5 African presidents or convey the importance of Spain & India in African affairs. They are clueless. Unfortunately, Blacks know very little about U.S. foreign affairs with countries from England to China. But why should blacks learn anything about foreign policy? Why is it so important? This question can be answered in many ways, but the one that resonates is jobs.

The Black communities are drowning in unemployment and dependence on government financial assistance. One remedy is education about entrepreneur and trade opportunities abroad that can help rejuvenate these communities and thereby reduce crime, unwed births, single parenting, dependence on government assistance, and other social-economic plagues."
