Yet Another Letter to the Defender - Hate Crimes Flavored with Chocolate
December 18, 2002
Dear Editor:
Something is really bothering me to the point of nausea. Commentator Michelle Malkin wrote about an incident last November at the University of Mississippi. Two Black students found written on their door in their dorm “F-----g N----r” and “F-----g H-e N-----r.” There were also other objectionable graffiti on the walls in the dorm. Obviously there was outrage. There was a “Say No to Racism” march organized by the Black students, which I would have participated in if I were a student there. There were also demands to prosecute the perpetrators under state felony laws and federal hate crime laws. I would have demanded nothing less under the circumstances to catch those white folks.
Of course the offending perpetrators were white, right? Wrong.
The perpetrators were three Black students. What? What? What? Yes. They even made false and misleading statements to investigators. Did they do this in the spirit of good clean Black-on-Black fun? I have some other questions. Does the fact that the perpetrators were Black lessen the psychological damage that was done? Do those students with damaged psyches deserve any less justice? Should these Brothers be charged with a hate crime, even though they did it to their own? People do get punished for calling in false alarms for fires, yanno. What sort of restitution do the perpetrators owe to the other Black students on campus? Why are they making themselves look awfully bad? This seems like a “self-hate crime” to me.
