Dear Sudan Advocates
Dear Sudan Advocates,
If you think that the reduction in news about Sudan is because the situation is improving, IT IS NOT.
If you think that the United Nations is about to send in the cavalry to stop the genocide, IT IS NOT.
If you think that the United Nations functions in such a way as to really care about the victims in Sudan, YOU ARE MISTAKEN. Each of the nations lobbies for its own selfish interest.
If you think that the United States is about to act unilaterally, IT IS NOT.
If you think that the United States has a critical interest in Sudan, you are WRONG AGAIN.
Our interests are defined in terms of strategic business and military concerns.
Nor has the Government of Sudan stopped its support of militias in Darfur and the South. The Government of Sudan remains firmlyallied with those perpetrators who:
• Rape young girls in front of their fathers while requiring their fathers to watch, Then they dismember the fathers while the girls watch,
• Cut the lips off young boys who are suspected of being opposedto them,
• Chain children together, put them in a hut and burn them to death,
• Engineer mass starvation, dehydration and death from preventable disease,
And they,
• Impede the efforts of humanitarian workers while
• Denying the entire situation.
The United States is not going to do anything. We are horribly divided as a nation, mired in elections, focused on Iraq, and generally incapable of acting. The United Nations is not going to do anything because of the totally conflicting goals of the member states. Neither will the European Union nor the African Union act. Meanwhile, people are dying in Sudan.
But if the United States has no critical interests, how aboutChristians? Jesus said to love your neighbor as yourself. He did not say except when there is no critical interest. He did not say except when the people are Africans. He did not say except if they are black neighbors.
Here is what you can do:
PRAY as never before. Here is what the Sudan Prayer Shield, a prayer network operating in South Africa asks:
• Pray for a Godly breakthrough that will lead to a Godly peace.
• Pray for the victims of this brutal war.
• Pray for the relief aid and rescue teams.
• Pray for the perpetrators that they may change their ways.
ACT: Eric Reeves points out - As genocide continues to flourishin Sudan, and a final peace agreement between Khartoum and southern Sudan remains in limbo, a number of observers have begun to argue that there can be no moral justification for holding investments in the many European and Asian companies that are now propping up the Khartoum regime by means of large commercial investments and capital projects. He is right.
You may be surprised that a number of these European and Asian companies list their shares on the New York Stock Exchange and are held in many mutual funds, pension funds, and foundation accounts. Here is a Partial list of Companies Involved (ticker symbols in parenthesis):
1. Germany's Siemens AG (SI) presently building the world's largest diesel-powered electrical generating plant outside Khartoum;
2. Switzerland's Asea Brown Boveri Limited, Zurich (ABB) now engaged in a huge project to upgrade the electrical grid forKhartoum and the surrounding urban areas, as well as in automation work for the major oil production consortium in Sudan
3. France's Alcatel (ALA) , a telecommunications giant, is yet another company that offers commercial telecommunications support that benefits Khartoum, and the immediate environs of Khartoum; without benefiting the rest of the people.
4. China National Petroleum Corporation is the dominant andmost ruthless international player in Sudan's oil sector. PetroChina (PTR) is wholly controlled and 90%-owned by CNPC and lists on the New York Stock Exchange.
5. Tatneft (TNT) is a Russian oil company that is an important participant in Sudan's oil sector. If you own individual stocks, please review your portfolio. If you own any of these stocks, understand that inadvertently, you are supporting those companies which in turn support the Government of Sudan’s genocidal policies. SELL THOSE STOCKS NOW and tell your broker why.
More guidance will be forthcoming concerning other ways in whichwe may be able to use the freedom which we enjoy to influence companies which are operating in Sudan to assist the Government. We will address mutual funds, pension plans, and foundations soon.
